1099
This is a government form used for independent contractors. Workers using this form pay their own taxes and are therefore "exempt" from employer tax deductions. This type of worker is not the same as temporary or hourly emplyee. Misclassifying employees in this way can result in government fines and back taxes.

A tax code that's intended to prevent drug dealers from claiming tax deduction for their business expenses, interpreted to include state-legal cannabis businesses reduction of deductions results in increases taxable income marijuana companies face higher federal tax rates: 40%-80% vs 21% corporate tax.
administrator
A person at your company who as special permissions so they can see and maintain your ststem setup, such as who has what tupe of access, how payroll and timesheets worl, and the types of notifications everyone in Wurk receive. This person may also perform Manager functions. Admins also work closely with people at Wurk to design and adjust your system.
Advanced Scheduler
This is an add-on Wurk product that enables extensive functionality for managing work schedules for employees, such as shift swapping, in-depth reporting, and detailed labor oversight. As a manager, supervisor, or administrator, you will see an extensive list of options under Scheduling.
asset
An asset is typically job-related equipment (owned by the company or the employee), such as a cell phone, company car, monitor, laptop, etc. Your administrator sets these up for your company, and these can be assigned to employees and tracked in the HR module (for value, condition, return, replacement, lost or stolen, etc.) and on the employee profile.
ATS
This module may be an addition in the Wurk system. It's used to meet the recruitment, hiring, and onboarding needs of businesses. You can manage job postings, recruitment, application collection, background checks, and comprehensive audit trail. Recruiters can share interview notes, match applicants to key job criteria, and coordinate hiring profiles with jobs defined by your HR department. Jobs from HR flow into ATS but not visa versa. If you do not have this module enabled, contact your Wurk Account Manager.
change request
This is request to change a submitted timesheet, which will go to the employee's manager who review and approves the timesheet.
clocking
Clocking is the process of punching in and punching out, and affects the employee's timesheet, which is used to calculate payroll and utlimately affects paycheck and related acrruals.
company short name
This is the name you see in the URL for your Wurk site. For example, https://secure2.sasshr.com/ta/COMPANYSHORTNAME.admin.
cost center
A department or location used to track and charge hours for employees. As an employee, you may need to specify which cost center you are working in when you clock in or out or enter your timesheet. As a manager, you many need to review employees' timesheets in order to confirm that they charged to the correct cost centers. Cost centers are often used for reporting on budget, time, and labor.
counter
In terms of employee hours, a count is the type of hours, such as Holiday, Sick, PTO, or Regular (Hourly or Salary/Exempt)
direct deposit
Direct Deposit is the process of transmitting funds into the employee's bank account. Using Wurk's fully insured banking solution, employeees can count on this as the fastest, safest, and most direct method for getting paid. The old method of printing and mailing checks can cause delays in getting paid, take more time to add to yourbank account, and increases the changes of lost or stolen checks.
E-verify
This is a web-based system that confirms employment eligibility based on information recorded on the I-9. It has become a best practive foremployers to verify eligibility to work in the United States. It's important to not that Missouri does not require E-verify except for public employers and contractors. If you choose to utilize E-verify at your palce of business, always ensure it is utilized consistently with every single new hire.
EEO
Federally mandated requirement that certain types of employers report on gender, ethnicity, and job title information to prove their compliance to the Equal Opportunity Act.
EIN
Signifies a business unit or copmany name within your organization, but is different than departments or cost centers. An EIN is an entire business entity with legal, reporting, and tax responsibilities. Having multiple EINs in Wurk is called "MULTI-EIN" and is a key component for managing your organization and reporting to the government. Be aware that when transferring employees from one EIN to another, for record-keeping purposes, you must first set up the second EIN (with help from Wurk administrators), then transfer them from the old one. This syncs data between the two EINS in Wurk and results in the employees getting two tax forms (like W2s) for that employment period.
employer portions
The section of the I9 form (Verification of identity and ability to work in the U.S.) that employers must legally complete for every employee.
exceptions
An exception may occur if your team uses schedules, and an employee punch deviates from that schedule (for example, late in or early out). This will be flagged on the timesheet for the employee so the manager or supervisor can see it. Exceptions are defired in Pay Calculation Profiles by your administrator.
exempt
Exempt from clocking in and out (not to be confused with being Tax Exempt, which means to be exempt from tax withholding.)
FLSA
Each state has specific laws as it relates to exempt vs. non-exempt when it comes to wage and hour compliance. The FLSA states that hourly, non-exempt employees must receive at least time and a half for an hour worked that exceeds the 40-hour work week.
HCMToGo
This is the name of the app you can download on your phone to view the Wurk site.
HR
Everything related to managing perople except for managing pay overseeing time and labor. For example, maintaining employee information, benefits, hire dates, job titles, performance, and government paperwork.
HR Action
A shortcut to help you do something in Wurk; it typically covers all the information you need to submit in one place. Doing the same task without the HR Action, by contrast, may call for you to navigate to several areas of Wurk and may not be as intuitive.
I-9
Form I-9 is used to verify your identity and employment authorization and is required for all employment in the United States. All U.S. employers must ensure proper competion of Form I-9 for each individual they hire for work in the United States. This includes citizens and noncitizens.
job assignments
Like a job title, a job in Wurk is assigned to employees and can also be associated with cost centers, locations, or departments. As an employee, you may need to choose which job you are doing as part of punching in or out or filling out your timesheet. As a manager, you may need to review jobs employees selected during the time entry process. Jobs are another way to report on labor and work distribution.
life change
A major event that affects an employee's HR information, such as a birth, death, marriage, divorce, disability, etc.
manager
This person has special permissions and access in Wurk so they can view, enter, and update employee's personal and HR information, pay, hours, jobs, departments, and so on. This person may hire, terminate, promote, and oversee hours, timesheets and sometimes payroll and benefits.
open enrollment
This is the designated period when you can add or change your benefits, which differs by state and employer. You may see prompts from Wurk when you log in to alert you about these times.
password
This is the code you use to lo into Wurk. It must be 8 characters and use one of each of the following: Uppercase letter, Lowercase letter, Number, Special Character.
prenote
The electronic, zero-dollar ACH test to validate that Wurk can successfully deposit funds into a bank account. Prenotes are sent and verified before direct deposit payroll can be processed. This can take 2 to 4 weeks.
primary contact
The person HR will need to contact if they cannot reach you in the event of an emergency. Be sure to provide the most direct method for contacting this person, such as a mobile phone number.
Reservice Live Check
This is a special type of live paycheck, typically used in rare cases where the employee needs to set aside some of their pay to be sent to them via a live check in addition to a normal direct deposit. Before requesting this type of payment, we recommend that you check witrh you payroll and HR specialists to make sure they can support this type of payment.
timesheet
A log of hours worked used in Payroll to calculate pay. If you are salaried employee, you may not be required to work with your timesheets as these are typically used for hourly employees. They go through a review and approval p rocess in order to be used for calculating pay, accruals, etc. Timesheets are located on the Main Menu under My Info>My Time. if unsure, speak to your manager.
TLM
The process of overseeing, maintaining, and updating this kind of information for your employees, such as timesheets and hours, jobs, cost centers, or departments. This information affects payroll calculations and your company's bottom line. It's a module of Wurk that must be enabled by your admin in order to display in the Main Menu, and is included in all software packages from Wurk.
User Name
THis is the name you use to log in to Wurk, and until you reset it to something else, it follow this pattern: {First Name Initial}{Last Name}{Last 2 digits of SSN}(or your {Employee ID} from your Wurk welcome email.)
web clock
A website outside of the Wurk web application where you can punch in anout, and requires special setup by your Administrator.
withholding
You typically submit a least one tax withholding form each for state and federal to HR during your onboarding, such as a 1099, W-2, or W-4. Those forms are stored under My Info>Hy HR>My Pay> Forms>Withholding from the Main Menu. The tax deductions from them are caculated into your paycheck. If enabled, you can add new forms in Wurk and submit them to HR.
